Mail List Charter and Policy

The NANOG mailing list is established to provide a forum for the exchange of technical information and the discussion of specific implementation issues that require cooperation among network service providers. In order to continue to provide a useful forum for discussion of relevant technical issues, NANOG has established the following guidelines for participation. 

By using NANOG’s mailing list, you agree that you have read and will follow these rules and policy.  Questions should be directed to[email protected]

Pre-Posting Guide

Our pre-posting guide for messages to the NANOG e-mail list:

  1. Does my email have operational/technical content?
  2. Would I be interested in reading this email?
  3. Would 10,000 other Internet engineers want to read this?

Acceptable Use Policy 

  1. Discussion will focus on Internet operational and technical issues as described in the Bylaws of NANOG.
  2. Postings of issues inconsistent with the Bylaws are prohibited.
  3. Cross posting is prohibited.
  4. Postings that are defamatory, abusive, profane, threatening, or include foul language, character assassination, and lack of respect for other participants are prohibited.
  5. Product marketing is prohibited.
  6. Postings of political, philosophical, and legal nature are prohibited.
  7. Posting any information or material protected by copyright without the permission of the copyright owner is prohibited.
  8. Using list as source for private marketing initiatives is prohibited.
  9. Autoresponders sending mail either to the list or to a poster are prohibited. 
  10. Use caution when discussing products. Information posted is available for all to see, and comments are subject to libel, slander, and antitrust laws. 
  11. Postings that encourage or facilitate members to arrive at any agreement that either expressly or impliedly leads to price fixing, a boycott of another’s organization or business, or other conduct intended to illegally restrict free trade are prohibited. 
  12. Postings that encourage or facilitate an agreement about the following subjects are inappropriate: prices, discounts, or terms or conditions of sale; salaries; benefits, profits, profit margins, or cost data; market shares, sales territories, or markets; allocation of customers or territories; or selection, rejection, or termination of customers or suppliers.
  13. Use the right channels for complaints.  The mailing list is not the appropriate platform to resolve personal issues or engage in disputes. 
  14. Posts that should not be sent to the entire list serve include “thank you” or “me too” messages – which should be sent directly to the poster being responded to, and requests to be removed from the list – which should be addressed through administrative channels.  
     

Individuals who violate the Acceptable Use Policy will be contacted and asked to adhere to the above.  Although NANOG does not actively monitor the list serve for inappropriate postings, NANOG reserves the right to reject or remove any inappropriate posts brought to the attention of NANOG.  In addition, NANOG reserves the right to terminate access to any user who does not abide by these guidelines.

NANOG is not responsible for the opinions and information posted to the mailing list by others.  NANOG makes no representations or warranties with regard to information posted to the list serve, including, with respect to the accuracy or completeness of the posting, whether posted by NANOG or a third party.  NANOG disclaims all warranties, express or implied, including but not limited to implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for any particular purpose. Users agree to use the mailing list at their own and sole risk.
